YouTube and Google Arts & Culture celebrate black music in the UK
Visualising the history of black music in the UK
Union Black aims to capture the history and legacy of black music in the UK, telling the stories of subcultures that have gone on to influence the world not only musically, but with fashion, food, and all the way through to the mainstream.
I developed a look and feel for the project, of which content is created and hosted between YouTube and Google Arts & Culture. The system is purposefully genre-agnostic, and pulls on universal musical cues to carry an expression based around iconography and colour. What results is a celebration of art, artists and black culture that avoids the visual tropes of individual country's visual languages.
